While much of the country begins stepping out of the darkness of the pandemic, the impact and struggles remain ever-present for nurses and other frontline providers. Congress must guarantee that a steady supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) is manufactured right here in the US and the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) is adequately resourced during – and after – the COVID-19 pandemic. Congress can make this happen by passing the PPE in America Act (S. 308/H.R. 1436).

The bipartisan legislation would not only boost PPE production but would create a pilot program that ensures that a certain percentage of the materials used to make PPE comes from domestic manufacturers. More domestic manufacturing ensures a consistent supply of masks and N95 respirators across the country as the pandemic continues and as we look towards the future.

ANA’s own surveys have shown the lack and extended use of PPE was the largest complaint from nurses and other health care providers. Having more domestic control of the production, supply chain and regular evaluation of the SNS would help safeguard our nation’s nurses from PPE shortages permanently.

We all have our own stories to tell about PPE and the shortages faced throughout the pandemic Please share yours and remind your members of Congress of the challenges that you faced. Customize your letter however you like.
