According to the CDC, Black women are 17% less likely to breastfeed than White women. Strong evidence confirms that breastfed infants have reduced risks of infections and mortality, while breastfeeding mothers have lower risks of cancers, diabetes, and hypertension. Racism has a significant role in the low breastfeeding rates for Black women.

The lack of knowledge, resources, options, support, and bias contributes to breastfeeding disparities for Blacks. Dr. David Satcher, the 16th Surgeon General of the United States, stated in 2020 that low breastfeeding rates in some minority communities are a serious public health challenge. We agree with him that the time has come for us to work together to promote optimal breastfeeding practices. To bring awareness to this, Rochester Black Nurses Association (RBNA) will be launching the “See Me” Project during Black Breastfeeding Week, August 25th – 31st.
