President's Message - GVNA President Diane Morrison

Happy New Year! Hoping everyone had a wonderful holiday season making new memories with family and friends. We are excited to be starting a new year and looking forward to meeting you. Please reach out to your fellow nurse friends and colleagues with encouragement to join GVNA if they have not done so already. There is no better time to join as we have decided to keep the membership price discounted. We are busy preparing for the upcoming Legislative reception to be held February 23 @ St. John Fisher University, Basil Hall, RM 135. We welcome your voices for change and this is a wonderful opportunity for you to come meet your state legislators and actively participate.

We are also excited to be planning our “second” in person Spring Banquet/Awards dinner, after “the Covid shutdown”. We would love to have you join us for great food, drink, and networking! Details forthcoming. If you know of a colleague you would like to nominate for an award, please start preparing now as we put the “call for nominations” out in March. All of the information can be found on our GVNA website.

Please continue to access the GVNA website as there are always continuing education opportunities, job postings, and announcements. Board elections will be coming up again soon. Will you consider sitting on our board? If you have talent for creativity, if you are tech savvy, if you are a planner, if you are a detailed individual, do you like social media - then we would love to have you as part of our team. You can reach out by email and we will be in touch.

Looking forward to seeing “old” friends and meeting new ones this year!! Reminds me of a GS song - “Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold”! Stay warm, stay well, but most importantly STAY INFORMED!

- Diane

I look forward to meeting you at our events and serving as president in the coming years. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or just to chat. Stay warm and healthy this winter season!

Annual CORNO Offering Tackles Challenges Nurses Face in Today's Workplace

On October 6, 2022 The Coalition of Regional Nursing Organizations (CORNO) hosted its annual educational offering at St. John Fisher University. The program was in-person for the first time since 2019.  Thanks to the sponsorship of many nursing organizations, there was no charge for the over 100 nurses and nursing students who attended.

The title of the program was This Is Not 2019 Anymore!  Where Do We Go from Here. Topics and speakers included:

  • HWE/Violence Against Nursing - Wendy Allen-Thompson, Director of Emergency Nursing at University of Rochester Medical Center

These topics encompassing the nurse staffing crisis are covered in great detail by the Nurses Staffing Think Tank Committee:  https://www.nursingworld.org/~49940b/globalassets/practiceandpolicy/nurse-staffing/nurse-staffing-think-tank-recommendation.pdf.

Acting Locally, Leading Statewide - The GVNA - ANA-NY Connection (And You)

Sarah Miner, chair of GVNAs Nominations and Awards Committee, was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the American Nurses Association – New York. Marilyn Dollinger, a long-time member (and past president) of GVNA was recently elected to her second term as the President of ANA-NY. GVNA News & Views reached out to Sarah  to ask why nurses might want to join a professional organization at the state and national as well as the local level. Sarah shared the attached file, Join ANA-NY, that details the benefits of joining ANA and ANA-NY.

Briefly,  ANA-NY is the professional association for all registered nurses in New York State and a state constituent member of the American Nurses Association. ANA-NY is dedicated to promoting excellence in the nursing practice and improving health care for all. In becoming a member of ANA-NY you will belong to a community of informed and dedicated group of registered professional nurses to share your experiences, find support, learn from peers in all stages in their career, and have opportunities to participate in leadership positions. You’ll gain access to resources to help you advance your career through such as webinars, networking opportunities, and the annual conference. Membership in ANA and ANA-NY will help you to stay up-to-date on nursing news – communicating with you through various means such as their newsletters and email alerts.

If you're looking to get involved in professional organizations and activities - in addition to GVNA, of course - you'll find information here: https://anany.nursingnetwork.com/page/68181-membership-information.
